Rehearsal can be any time from to Sometimes I'll have six hours of rehearsal in a day.
If I have a break in rehearsals, I get to the gym and do more workouts. I might squeeze in some ab work when I get home if I can, and I try to be in bed by By the day off on Monday, I feel like I've been hit by a train. I use those days to do errands, chores, go to the doctor. Most dancers take the day off from physical activity, but I usually try to get a Pilates class or another workout in. It is really important to rest your body though. I learned that the hard way in When I was 25, I was suffering a ton of ankle pain.
The doctor did an MRI and said my posterior tibial tendon — on the outside of the anklebone — looked like string cheese. It was completely unraveling. For female dancers, it's often an area of pain because that tendon is the stabilizer for pointe work, but most get tendinitis or something milder like that. My injury wasn't just from all the pounding over the years; it was also because of poor nutrition.
I wasn't anorexic, but I think I have the mentality of one. I don't see myself in the mirror as I actually am. I was definitely cutting out a lot of foods: I ate only boiled chicken, non-fat yogurt, fruit, and vegetables.
Eventually my body suffered. I'd eaten like that for over a decade, because when I was younger, I started thinking that if I were skinny, I'd be a better dancer.
I think dancers are more susceptible to being overly conscious of our bodies. We are being partnered and touched all day. We stare at ourselves in a leotard in the mirror, and we have to go on stage and feel confident. Our costumes reveal everything. I think most dancers have some sort of battle with food and body image that ranges from mild to severe. Weight is always a topic of conversation in the dance world, but some don't let it get to them. All of us feel "gross and fat" during layoff, and we naturally get "skinny" when we dance during the season for several hours a day.
Not all dancers go as far as developing eating disorders. For me, it took getting injured to seek help. Rehearsing and performing takes a lot of energy, so it needs to be replenished. Definitely a New York-style pepperoni pizza. My favourite! I need to treat myself to something every day—makes my stomach smile.
Anything from ice cream which I sometimes make myself to small desserts from our local bakery. I try to switch between the usual proteins like beef, chicken, and fish, then add things like avocado, broccoli, and asparagus. Other snacks like cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, and bananas with peanut butter are great too during the day when you need a pick-me-up. Toss butternut squash in sesame oil, garlic, salt, and pepper and roast at degrees until tender.
Toss purple kale with rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil 1 tbsp. Toss all the vegetables and rice together with pickled ginger, sliced green onions, and toasted sesame seeds. I usually have to make sure that I get all the protein and good essential fats I need to have energy.
I eat mostly organic and stay away from bad sugars, carbohydrates, and processed foods. Direct to your inbox, everyday.
