You can fight your way through the enemies that guard that checkpoint, then continue along the map to reach the Silver Canyon area, which you can make available using an Energy Hex that was provided to you by the servant at Barbarella's Manor.

Get some levels with the grenades, but hoard all your molotov cocktail types so you can just blast some of them to death.
I think if you leave vash standing in front of the statue it slows it down and the enemies further away cannot target it. There might also be something to the idea that enemies often target the first thing to move, so maybe you should just walk a few steps with a decoy before using a hero action, although as I remember it, they all still liked to go after the statue.
Save a few molotovs for the endboss, too. Same way if you find those machine gun bullets that do fire damage. If that part is covered, what about all the other parts I mentioned? It looked like you have two people with NO gained levels in grenades and one with no gained levels in MG.
Those are basically free levels screaming to benefit you. Red dot fights can yield them and so will very few hexes. I don't know if you could have gotten a full one or two by then or not, it's been awhile.
Finally, is the statue actually getting destroyed? You shouldn't have to suffer too much damage in the first few battles, anyway. The one with the barrels, you can just skip the item and shoot a barrel to help clean out that part. If you aren't killing them fast enough, you're doing something wrong or not good enough. I have 4.
